Roblox anti-cheat: the complete guide for game owners

If you run a Roblox experience that has any kind of leaderboard, economy, or competitive play, you will meet exploiters. Not eventually: within days of getting traction. This guide covers what an anti-cheat can and cannot do on Roblox, why so many approaches quietly fail, and what to look for if you are choosing one, whether that ends up being ours or not.

What "anti-cheat" actually means on Roblox

On PC games, anti-cheat usually means a kernel driver watching process memory. Roblox is nothing like that. Your game is code running on Roblox's servers plus untrusted clients you never see. An exploiter runs your client with their own script executor attached, and from the server's point of view they are simply a player whose behavior stopped making sense. That is the entire battlefield: behavior. A Roblox anti-cheat is a system that notices when a player's actions could not have come from someone playing the game fairly, and then does something proportionate about it.

Why client-side anti-cheat keeps failing

The most common homemade approach is a LocalScript that watches for speed, teleports, or injected GUIs and reports the player. It feels effective in testing and it fails in production, for one structural reason: the cheater controls the machine your detector runs on. Any client-side check can be deleted, stubbed out, or fed fake data by the same executor it is trying to catch. The people you most want to stop are exactly the people who can turn your detector off.

That does not make client signals worthless. It makes them untrusted input. A serious system treats anything the client says as a hint to be verified against what the server itself can measure, and never as grounds for punishment on its own. If a vendor tells you their client-side module is tamper-proof, that is a claim Luau cannot support.

What a Roblox game server can actually see

Server code gets a surprisingly rich picture without touching anything private: positions and velocities every frame, the timing and contents of every RemoteEvent, damage dealt and taken, resources gathered per minute, session rhythm, platform, and the account itself (age, badges, groups, friends, past usernames). What it does not get matters just as much. There is no IP address you can act on, no hardware ID, no way to read the client's memory. Any product that advertises hardware bans for Roblox games is describing something the platform does not expose to developers.

Good detection is therefore statistical. A single spike of speed might be lag compensation or a knockback. Fifty spikes in a pattern no human produces, corroborated by remote traffic that ignores your game's own cooldowns, is a different story. The honest way to frame every verdict is as a confidence level built from independent signals, and the honest way to act on it is a ladder: log first, kick when sure, ban when certain, and keep every rung below a permanent ban reversible.

The false-ban problem is the real problem

Ask communities that have collapsed, and it is rarely because cheaters went unpunished for a week too long. It is because legitimate players got banned by a trigger-happy heuristic and the game's staff defended the tool instead of the player. A false ban converts your most invested players into your loudest critics. This is why any anti-cheat worth paying for is obsessed with the negative case: what happens when the detector is wrong? Look for shadow modes that let you watch verdicts against real traffic before anything is enforced, evidence attached to every action, and reversibility as a design rule rather than a support ticket.

Questions to ask any vendor (including us)

Where does detection run? If the answer is mostly on the client, see above. Can I see why a player was flagged? A verdict without evidence is a coin flip you are paying for. What happens on day one? If the tool enforces before it has watched your game, your movement mechanics will define its false positives. How does it handle ban evasion? The honest answer involves Roblox's official Ban API and account-level signals; the dishonest one involves the words hardware or IP. What does it collect? Roblox audiences skew young, and the answer should be: the minimum, with a way to appeal and a way to erase.
